How one director of biomed engineering put an end to the madness


Challenge: Broken Bladder Scanners

For years, a 200-bed hospital system in the northeastern U.S. was forced to send one (sometimes two) of their 18 conventional bladder scanners out for repair every month—at a cost of $3,000 per incident.

The cause? The scanner probes’ rounded design didn’t lay flat on the cart. They were also hard to place back into the holder. When the probes fell to the ground, they broke.

Even when the scanner probes weren’t broken, preventive maintenance on the units dogged his busy technicians. Lastly, the scanners frequently developed spider cracks in their plastic covers—a serious liability for hospitals.

Solution and Results:  Uscan eliminates problems and maintenance

The healthcare system replaced five of its 18 scanners with Uscan, with plans to replace the rest over time. After a year on the job, Uscan has made his life easier.

“Signostics told me they had a five-year unconditional warranty. So if the probe was dropped, broken or failed, the company would replace whatever was broken,” said the system’s Director of Biomedical Engineering.

“Uscan is pretty simple and easy to understand. It uses an off-the-shelf tablet with nice videos to show the nurses how to use it,” he said.

“To date, we have not experienced a single issue with the Uscan units,” he said.

“They self-calibrate every time they’re powered up, so there’s no preventive maintenance that needs to be done by my staff to ensure they are working. That saves me some time and labor,” he said.

The director also appreciated that Uscan is much more than just a bladder scanner, with the expandability to assist with other challenging nursing duties like vein finding.

“On nursing unit floors, they don’t have quick access to higher tech vein finders and ultrasounds,” he said. “If they’re having an issue with a PICC line or trying to get something done for a patient—or the patient has discomfort for whatever reason—it’s just a few steps to the floor’s equipment room. Anytime we can get the equipment in our nurses’ and clinicians’ hands sooner, it certainly equates to a better patient experience,” said the director.
