A Breakthrough in Bladder Care

The first half of 2016 has been an exciting time for Signostics and I wanted to find a way to communicate and connect with the people that matter the most to us – you. Our customers, our patients, our community. So I’m launching this blog to enable Signostics to provide information and share perspectives on topics and issues relevant to the ultrasound industry. We are in a dynamic time with new ultrasound innovations and products being developed, and I’m proud that Signostics is playing a leading role in this evolving field.

In May Signostics received FDA clearance for Uscan™, a breakthrough device for advanced ultrasound in bladder care. Uscan provides real-time ultrasound imaging of the bladder, kidneys, pelvic floor, prostate, gallbladder, bladder stones and urological catheter emplacement, for quick and easy visual tracking and observation. This is important as it enables clinical care team members to acquire high-definition sonographic imaging that better informs treatment decisions, streamlines workflows and ultimately supports treatment of a wider range of patients.

I like to say Uscan doesn’t just scan, it sees. Because of our unique computer vision algorithms, we’re able to recognize the 3D contours of the bladder for far more accurate volume measurements than the industry standard, even on obese and hard-to-scan patients.

We now have colleagues in the field introducing Uscan across the country, and one story illustrates what Uscan can uniquely do. Recently at a presentation at a hospital, a nurse who claimed she had a “full bladder” volunteered to have her bladder volume measured using a few different bladder scanning devices. A competitor’s handheld device first read 183 mL and then 285 mL in two consecutive scans. Another device read 389 mL. We then scanned her two times with Uscan and received 449 and 451 mL measurements. Incredibly, the nurse volunteer voided 451 mL. Her fellow nurses said, “Now that is just too amazing” and “I love it,” proclaiming they had never had access to imaging bladder volume that was so accurate and easy to use.

Now that’s what I like to hear. These types of anecdotes drive us to do more to push ultrasound innovation. We have a wonderful new tool, and our technology can eliminate the guess work often employed in urologic care, and eventually beyond. Uscan has the potential to set a new standard in ultrasound imaging.

We recently introduced Uscan to physicians at the American Urological Associations’ 2016 Annual Meeting (AUA 2016) in San Diego. We had a live demonstration of the device at the exhibit booth and received extremely positive feedback from attendees, which reinforced that Uscan is a better device that is meeting a real need from health care professionals.

I can’t wait to see what else this year brings. Thanks for reading and please stay tuned for more posts about the future of ultrasound innovation.

The bladder volume measurement provided by the sales representative in this blog is just an example but does not reflect the actual accuracy of the device. Signostics cannot guarantee achieving this accuracy in every measurement but the device can measure Bladder volume with an accuracy of ±10% or ±10 mL, based on comparative measurements of a phantom of known volume. Please refer to device user manual.
